The peak of Charlus
Bassignac

It is a "monogenic" volcanic edifice, i.e. a volcano with a single chimney, each eruption having produced, over a short period of time, only one type of lava. All that remained, after the passage of the glaciers, were remnants of the chimney known as necks.
Charlus was also one of the most important fortresses in the Haute-Auvergne region. To this day, only a few sections of wall remain, along with a cross marking the entrance to the castle's ancient chapel. Charlus was first mentioned well before the year 1000, and the history of its successive owners ends at the dawn of the 19th century. The site offers a vast panorama from the Gorges de la Dordogne to the Monts du Cantal, well worth the effort of climbing to the summit. There is a hiking trail to help you get to know the site: PR 22: Le Pic de Charlus. Free access all year round.
