"I'd rented an apartment and, alas, I'd left my music at home! I looked everywhere. There was a CD player with a record in it. I press 'Play'. It was Jacques Brel! I'd been told for so long that I sounded just like him! But I'd never been interested in his work. I only knew the great standards of his repertoire, such as Amsterdam or Ne me quitte pas. From the very first notes, I was blown away. The orchestration, the arrangements, the lyrics, the interpretation - I was immediately captivated! I listened to it over and over again, and as I was all alone in the apartment, I started humming...
No, Arnaud Askoy isn't Brel, but to hear and see him, you'd think he was. He is so sincere in bringing Brel to life.
Like Roland Romanelli's original arrangements, it's Arnaud Askoy's personal flame, his generous emotional charge, that should move us, creating a magic comparable to that of the era, like a living impressionist canvas. This is the promise: "Ceci n'est pas Brel!" as Magritte would have said, so let yourself be carried away...
