Summits in Abondance
Haute-Savoie ()
The Abondance valley is famous for its mountain pastures, cows and cheese. It's also worth a visit for its chalets and peaks, from which you can enjoy exceptional panoramic views! The Chablais massif, which borders Switzerland, is ideally situated between Lake Geneva and the Mont-Blanc massif. When the trails aren't overlooking the lake, they're panoramic, facing the highest point in the Alps! Starting out from a comfortable hotel, complete with swimming pool, come and climb some of the valley's finest peaks, all over 2000 m. This sporty program is supervised by a local guide who will show you the secret paths and promise you an unforgettable hike.
PROGRAM
Day 01 :
Pick-up at Thonon-les-Bains train station at 5:45pm, transfer to hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Those with cars will go directly to the hotel, where they can relax in the pool while waiting for dinner.
Day 02: La Combe Chemine (2020 m)
On the northern slopes of Mont de Grange, in the heart of the Nature Reserve.
A loop hike up a wild combe where we encounter Chamois and sometimes Mouflon. Descent via the Trebentaz refuge for a change of atmosphere and to watch for the golden eagle.
You've guessed it, this wildlife outing is off to a great start!
Ascent: + 730 m / - 730 m Length: 10 kms Time: 5 h 00
Day 03: Château d'Oche (2197 m).
The end of the French Alps: where the chain rising from Nice plunges into Lake Geneva.
Next to the Dent d'Oche, a well-known and much-visited summit, lies a citadel that can only be climbed by the initiated: the Château d'Oche. The result of this unique situation is a summit towering over Lake Geneva and slopes inhabited by ibex.
Total climb: + 940 m / - 940 m Length: 10 kms Time: 5 h 30
Day 04: Tour des Cornettes de Bise (2250 m).
Another unusual route around the impressive summit of the Cornettes de Bise. After the first pass, the Swiss side of the mountain is reached, where you won't meet many people, and where you can get the measure of the summit. The second pass is a revelation: the view of Mont Blanc is truly breathtaking!
The traverse at the foot of the south face is a panoramic delight, and it's a pleasure to climb back up among the alpine chalets to cross the 3rd and final pass.
Vertical rise: + 1035 m / - 1035 m Length: 11 kms Time: 6 h 30
Day 05: Le Roc de Tavaneuse (2156 m)
The Chablais of Rock and Water. This limestone massif is criss-crossed by clay layers, giving rise to torrents and lakes. This loop begins by crossing a small glacial lock that formed the Lac de Tavaneuse.
Then it's on to a thrilling ascent of an efilée ridge, leading to the summit of Roc de Tavaneuse.
On the other side is the valley of Morzine, the famous Portes du Soleil resort. The return journey takes us through a beautiful combe typical of the Pre-Alps.
Total climb: + 960 m / - 960 m Length: 8 kms Time: 5 h 30
Day 06: Mont de Grange (2432 m)
To end this week on a high note, the highest summit in the massif!
Centrally located, it's the perfect place to review all the week's hikes. The panorama faces the Dents du Midi (3257 m), a truly spectacular little mountain range. But the highlight of the day is the climb up a very wild ridge where the chamois are out in force and the steep slopes of the north face give way to us.
Ascent: + 1060 m / - 1060 m Length: 10 kms Time: 6 h 00 m
This program is indicative and may be modified by your guide to suit weather and snow conditions.
AREA INFORMATION
The hotel is located in the very open, south-facing Abondance valley, at an altitude of 900m. For most of the walks, we'll take a minibus to the starting point (approx. 10 mins). Each walk takes you to a pass or summit. They start out in a beautiful spruce forest, then lead into the mountain pastures, with views of the surrounding massifs, including Mont-Blanc. Lake Geneva is omnipresent, sometimes right under our feet, sometimes farther away between 2 mountains.
The summits are slender and aesthetically pleasing, consisting of a steep cliff on the north-facing slope, while access is via the gentler south-facing slope!
