Natural mineral resources
Haute-Savoie ()
Half-day option (1 class) - Half-group visit to the Bonnevaux coal mine. Students will learn about the history of this rock formation, the carbonification process and the history of mining (19th c.).
The 60m of galleries will enable them to observe the cavernicolous fauna, the speed of formation of limestone concretions, the inclined coal stratum, a small lake and the few traces left by the miners.
Full-day option (if 2 classes) - Complementary visit to the Vacheresse quarry, where the materials mined do not come from the mountainside, but from deposits dating back to the Ice Age. Documents will show two other quarries in the region where materials are taken from the mountain, and how they have been used by man. The outing ends with a reading of the landscape, observation of the traces left by the glaciers (morainic deposits) and the hardness of the different layers of rock.
All year round. On demand.
