Varagnes is the estate created by Marc Seguin (1786 - 1875), the famous inventor of the cable suspension bridge and the tubular boiler, and builder of the first modern railway line in continental Europe between Saint-Etienne and Lyon. In 1860, Marc Seguin, aged 75, bought Varagnes and turned it into a unique place dedicated to research, creation and transmission. To this end, Varagnes was equipped with workshops and laboratories, a library, an observatory and an artist's studio. Marc Seguin also created a beautiful double-walled greenhouse decorated by his children, as well as a large chapel, all of which have been listed as Historic Monuments since 1992. The books and archives have been listed as Historic Archives since 2023.
With the support of the DRAC, the Région and the Département of the Ardèche, the Association des Amis de la Fondation Seguin aims to encourage all members of the public to develop their creativity by offering a wide range of events: mediation and games, workshops, participative residencies with artists and scientists, guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, etc.
