Castle of Septème
Septème
The name Septème recalls the presence in Roman times of a military milestone at mile seven (septem in Latin) on the road from Vienne to northern Italy. A the top of the hill are the ruins of the old castle (10th century).
In the 13th century, the House of Savoy created a powerful base for operations against the Dauphin and set up an impressive stronghold with over 1 km of ramparts.
Today the castle is famous for its impressive ramparts surrounding a park where peacocks roam free.
The castle rooms are also exceptionally well preserved and are a chance for visitors to imagine life in the Middle Ages, thanks to the fine collections of furniture and ornamental objects.
