Ski Touring - Argentiere Cirque 2 days
Argentière
Gazing towards the vast Argentière glacier and mountain hut, the ski-tourer is dazzled the vertiginous and ice- covered north faces.
The view of this rugged landscape extends from Aiguille Verte to Triolet peaks, then looking towards the Italy with Mont Dolent and Tour Noir, and ends with Aiguille d'Argentière and Chardonnet peak.
Here, the skier finds the playground he expected. He can choose, for example, the Amethysts Glacier, wide and not too steep, towards the Col du Tour Noir or better yet, the engaged and steady slope of the "Y" corridor on Aiguille d'Argentière.
In winter, both skiers and climbers meet in the Argentière refuge; numerous roped parties take advantage of the favourable winter period to ascend the famous North faces of these intensely desired summits.
Info : Following the fire that hit the cable car of les Grands Montets, the itinerary will be modify; with an extra vertical ascent of 300 m. Starting from Bochard lift (2766m), we join Lognan glacier (2700m). Skin up to Les Grands Montets glacier (3050m) through the Rachasses pass. Here, we join the normal route.
Day 1 : We take the tram to reach the summit of Les Grands Montets (3 300/ 10 800ft).
We ski down by the Rognon to Argentière glacier. While we put our skins under our skis, we are inspired by other skiers’ choice, heading up some of the various routes around us. The Argentière glacier is mostly flat at this stage, making the ski tour to the refuge short and easy, allowing to stop and practice our avalanche search and rescue operations. We spend the rest of the day practicing ski touring techniques such as uphill ski turns. We stay overnight at the Argentière hut (2 771 m/ 9144ft). The view over the impressive north faces rising high above Argentière glacier is stunning!
Vertical gain: 300 to 500m/ 1000ft to 1650 ft Vertical drop: 1000m/3280ft
Day 2 : The day begins with a ski tour up Tour Noir glacier all the way to the pass (3 535 m/11 665ft). Depending on the group’s motivation and energy, we can also reach the nearby Argentière pass 3552m/ 11720ft. We ski back down the same way still enjoying the incredible view!
